What is process art?

At Smudge, every class is grounded in process art: the focus is on the making, not the final masterpiece. Kids explore real materials, follow their own ideas, and take creative risks, with no sample to copy and no wrong way to do it.

The making, not the masterpiece

Process over perfection.

Process art is an early-childhood art philosophy that puts the experience of making ahead of what gets made. There's no sample piece to copy, no set of steps everyone follows in order, and no wrong way for the artwork to turn out. A child chooses the colours, changes their mind, layers something new over the top, and the finished piece looks exactly like the choices that led to it.

Our classes are all about process over perfection, where kids are free to explore, make mistakes and express themselves. It's a screen-free hour with real materials: paint, clay, collage, sensory trays and more, guided by educators who understand how kids learn and create best.

Process art is an approach where the focus is on the making itself: exploring materials, trying things out and following an idea, rather than aiming for a tidy finished piece that looks a certain way. There's no sample to copy and no “right” way for the artwork to turn out.
Not quite. A lot of kids' art classes are step by step: everyone gets the same materials and follows the same instructions to make the same thing to take home. Process art classes, like ours, hand a child real materials and let them decide what happens next. Every child's piece looks different, because every child made their own choices.
Because the making is where the good stuff happens: experimenting, taking a creative risk, changing your mind halfway through. A pre-planned craft kit skips straight to a finished product and skips over all of that. Our classes are grounded in process art, so kids are free to experiment, take creative risks, and follow their own ideas.
